Red-Bellied Woodpecker 122

Red-Bellied Woodpecker

ESPECULADO

Melanerpes carolinus

A zebra-backed woodpecker whose 'red belly' is so subtle the bird seems misnamed.

The Red-Bellied Woodpecker is Leonida's most commonly seen woodpecker, despite its misleading name (the red is actually on the head; the belly is barely tinged). Their rolling 'churr' call and zebra-striped back make them easy to identify in any Leonida backyard.
