Chess in Leonida is a legitimately strong engine wrapped in the local flavor that makes it worth playing. The Crosstown park tables host a daily rotating crowd of hustlers who will gladly separate overconfident tourists from their wallets — play at increasing stakes against increasingly tough regulars, eventually triggering a storyline involving a grandmaster who disappeared from the Soviet scene in 1983 and has been living under a different name in Vice Beach ever since. The Gloriana university chess club is the sanctioned competitive scene with a proper rating system and tournament calendar.
