Pileated Woodpecker 121
Pileated Woodpecker
ESPECULADODryocopus pileatus
A crow-sized black woodpecker with a brilliant red crest, hammering holes in Leonida's deadwood.
The Pileated Woodpecker is Leonida's largest woodpecker and the apparent inspiration for Woody Woodpecker. Their rectangular excavations in dead trees are unmistakable, and their echoing 'kuk-kuk-kuk' call carries across entire forests.
