Overseas Highway

CONFIRMADO

Punto de interés — Leonida Keys

The improbable highway stringing the Leonida Keys together, miles of elevated concrete laid straight across open ocean with unbeatable views and zero shoulders.

The Overseas Highway is the ribbon of asphalt and concrete that makes the Leonida Keys possible — without it, the whole chain would be a string of boat-access-only oddities. Instead, it's a genuine engineering marvel: mile after mile of low-slung bridge sections laid straight across the Gulf, with nothing on either side of you but water, water, and a pelican riding the thermals over the guardrail. The drive is one of the state's signature experiences — sunrise from the northbound lanes will ruin sunrises everywhere else you go for the rest of your life. It's also a stretch of road with essentially nowhere to hide: the bridge sections have no shoulders, the pull-offs are scarce and exposed, and any car that goes into the water between mile markers is genuinely gone. This makes it an unusually popular route for certain cargoes that prefer not to be stopped at a roadside — smuggling up the Keys has been a local industry since long before the highway itself was built.
