Drag racing strips the entire sport of racing down to its purest and most unforgiving version: two cars, a quarter mile, and whatever you built under the hood. The legal side of the scene runs out of Waning Sands Speedway, where the staging lanes fill up on Friday nights with everything from restored big-block muscle to turbocharged Japanese coupes. The illegal side happens on an abandoned runway east of Escobar International and on the long straights of Stockyard's industrial blocks after midnight. Reaction-time timing matters, tire prep matters, the launch is everything, and one wrong shift will kick you out in the first sixty feet. The upgrade tree for drag-specific builds is deep — gear ratios, weight reduction, launch control, nitrous systems — and bragging rights live and die on official track records.
