The Southern Stingray is one of the most common residents of Leonida's shallow sandy waters, burying itself just beneath the surface where unsuspecting waders step on them. Their barbed tail delivers a painful venomous sting that has taught countless tourists the 'Leonida Shuffle' — shuffling your feet to announce your presence. Despite this defensive weapon, stingrays are generally docile and prefer to flee rather than fight.
