GTA 6 Hunting and Legendary Animals: Alligators, Wildlife and Tracking

GTA VI has the biggest wildlife system Rockstar has built since Red Dead Redemption 2, and you can hunt it. Here’s what’s confirmed and where to look.

Alligator hunting is in

The Extended Look shows alligator hunting as one of 16 activities, alongside an airboat run through the Grassrivers wetlands. Gators are Leonida’s signature predator, and they also starred in the first trailer.

Rare, discoverable and legendary animals

In Game Informer issue 382, Rockstar said some animals are categorised as:

• Rare: uncommon spawns worth chasing.
• Discoverable: species you log by finding them.
• Legendary: unique animals you can track.

Tracking legendary animals was the best part of RDR2’s hunting, where each one had a lore page, a set location and a unique pelt. Expect GTA VI to borrow that structure.

170+ species

• Over 60 bird species and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish and reptiles.
• Named so far: alligators, manatees, flamingos and pelicans.
• Invasive species such as green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques, according to Game Informer’s write-up.

Hunting tips for day one

1. Bring an airboat. It’s the fastest way through Grassrivers and keeps you out of the water.
2. Use a heavy weapon on gators. They’re tanks in every Rockstar game.
3. Check the weather. Storms and hurricanes roll through Leonida, and wildlife behaviour usually changes with weather in Rockstar games.
4. Log everything. If there’s a wildlife trophy, collecting as you go saves hours (trophy guide).
