GTA 6 File Size: How Much Storage Do You Need?
How big is GTA 6? Rockstar has not published an install size. Why the 228 GB figure is unverified, how much space to clear on PS5 and Xbox, and the cheapest upgrades.
Rockstar has not published a GTA 6 file size. Neither has PlayStation or Xbox. Any exact number you have seen, including the widely shared 228 GB figure, is an estimate or an unverified claim.
What you can do is plan for a large install, because pre-load opens on 12 November 2026 and a download that runs out of space fails rather than shrinking to fit.
What the evidence suggests
- Red Dead Redemption 2 needed around 150 GB on consoles at launch, including its day-one data.
- GTA VI’s map is about twice the size of GTA V’s according to Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut, with far denser interiors.
- GTA VI ships only on current-gen consoles, which removes old-hardware compression constraints but also means higher-resolution assets.
- A day-one update has not been announced, but most Rockstar launches have had one.
Putting that together, clear at least 250 GB if you can. That covers a large base install plus an update without a scramble on launch night.
Your storage, by console
| Console | Usable space out of the box | Room for GTA 6? |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 / PS5 Slim (825 GB to 1 TB) | about 667 to 850 GB | Yes, after clearing older games |
| PS5 Pro (2 TB) | about 1.8 TB | Comfortably |
| Xbox Series X (1 TB) | about 800 GB | Yes, after clearing older games |
| Xbox Series S (512 GB) | about 364 GB | Tight; likely needs an expansion card or clearing almost everything |
| Xbox Series S (1 TB) | about 800 GB | Yes |
Series S owners have the least margin. See the Xbox Series S guide.
Cheapest ways to add space
- PS5: an M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD with a heatsink, installed in the expansion slot. A 2 TB drive is the sweet spot for price per gigabyte.
- Xbox Series X|S: an official storage expansion card. Standard USB drives can store but not run current-gen games.
- Either console: move older games to a USB drive. It is free if you have one, and you can copy them back later.
Our launch gear links below include region-aware options for both consoles.
Pre-load checklist
- Clear space before 12 November.
- Turn on automatic downloads and rest or sleep mode downloads.
- Start the pre-load on 12 November and confirm it reaches 100 percent.
- Leave spare room for a day-one update.
Full steps are in the pre-load guide. We will update this page the moment Rockstar or a platform store publishes an official size.
Quick answers
How many GB is GTA 6?
Rockstar has not published an install size for GTA 6 on any platform. Figures online, including 150 GB and 228 GB, are estimates or unverified claims.
Is GTA 6 228 GB?
There is no official source for 228 GB. Rockstar, PlayStation and Xbox have not published a size, and no store listing shows one.
How much space should I clear for GTA 6?
Clear at least 250 GB if you can. Red Dead Redemption 2 needed around 150 GB at launch, GTA VI's map is larger, and a day-one update is likely. A download that runs out of space fails rather than shrinking.
Can I play GTA 6 from an external drive on PS5?
PS5 can store PS5 games on a USB drive but cannot play them from it. To play, the game must be on the internal SSD or an M.2 expansion drive. Xbox Series X|S can play current-gen games from an official expansion card only.
