GTA 6 New Zealand Trick: Unlock Early on Xbox and PS5?

New Zealand is the first major store region to unlock Grand Theft Auto VI. Store listings point to midnight on Thursday 19 November, New Zealand time, which is 11:00 UTC on Wednesday 18 November. That is the whole basis of the “New Zealand trick”: set your console or account to New Zealand and play up to 18 hours early.

It can work. It also has real costs, and they are different on Xbox and PlayStation. This guide explains both, without pretending either is officially supported.

How much earlier is New Zealand?

The trick on Xbox Series X|S

Xbox licences are tied to your Microsoft account rather than a region, and the unlock follows the console’s location setting. That is why this trick has worked for previous big releases on Xbox.

Reported steps:

1. Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings.
2. Go to System > Language & location.
3. Set Location to New Zealand and restart when prompted.
4. At 11:00 UTC on 18 November, the game should unlock if it is already installed.

The catches:

• Changing back. Microsoft limits how often you can change region. Reports say you may not be able to switch back to your home region immediately after launching the game.
• Store and balance. Your store will show New Zealand prices and content. Microsoft account balances are locked to the country they were added in.
• Subscriptions. Services such as Game Pass rely on billing details matching your account region. Check before changing anything if you have active subscriptions.
• Age rules. The change can be blocked if your account is restricted or flagged under another country’s age rules.

Pre-load first. If your install is already complete, you are only relying on the licence check, not a download from a different store.

The trick on PS5

PlayStation works differently. You cannot change the country of an existing PSN account. Changing the PS5 console region does not affect the unlock either.

The only route is:

1. Create a new PSN account with New Zealand as its country.
2. Add New Zealand PlayStation Store credit, usually via New Zealand-dollar gift cards, since foreign cards are generally rejected.
3. Buy GTA 6 again on that account and download it.

That means:

• You pay twice if you already pre-ordered on your main account.
• Saves and trophies live on the New Zealand account. Rockstar has not said whether saves can move between accounts.
• No refund route on your main account if you start downloading your main pre-order, because PlayStation blocks refunds once a download starts. See cancelling a pre-order.

For most people on PS5, the cost of a second copy is not worth 13 to 18 hours.

Is it allowed?

Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft have not endorsed the New Zealand trick for GTA 6. Setting a country you do not live in is outside the platforms’ intended use, and both companies’ terms expect accurate account details. There is no public record of bans for changing region to play early, but you take the risk on yourself, including losing access to region-locked balances or subscriptions.

Avoid VPNs, fake billing addresses and third-party “region change” services. Those go further than a settings change and carry account and payment risk.

Spoilers and the early-unlock wave

Whether or not you use the trick, remember that New Zealand and Australian players will be streaming and posting from 11:00 UTC on 18 November. If you want a clean first playthrough, mute keywords on social apps from that morning.

Our take

• Xbox owners who have already pre-ordered and do not depend on region-locked subscriptions have a genuine, low-cost option, with the caveat about switching back.
• PS5 owners would need to buy a second copy on a second account. For most people that is a poor trade.
• Everyone gets the most reliable result by pre-loading on 12 November and checking their own regional unlock time, which for many is already the evening of 18 November.
